Originally created in 1995 as a gimmick class which NASCAR could tour around to smaller venues like Mesa Marin Raceway and Tucson Speedway, the Craftsman Truck Series exploded in popularity, reaching its’ peak right as Project Wildfire released their unofficial-yet-kind-of-official Truck Series expansion for NR2003 free of charge. Yet while sim racers swore they saw Star Wars actress Natalie Portman hiding among the main menu background, the new set of both car models and physics earned an underground following from an unlikely set of individuals – the Winston Cup stars themselves. The trucks landed on Dave Despain’s Wind Tunnel talk show a handful of times over the years, with Cup drivers such as Denny Hamlin, Jerry Nadeau, and even Dale Earnhardt Jr. himself participating in Wednesday night online league races with the cameras rolling to demonstrate this strange world of sim racing for the show.
